Eva first spoke to her Community Potential Specialist about setting up a PSP during her six month visit. She had settled into her new home, and now that her daughter has grown up, she had aspirations of her own to get back into work – which she set as her goal. Having talked through her steps to get there with the Community Potential Specialist, she was soon talking to the Job Centre about how working would affect her benefits so she could plan and factor this in, as well as completing online skills checks on the National Careers Website to help her think about where her skills might fit.
Off the back of this Eva contacted Bucks College to enquire about a hairdressing course. This was something she always wanted to do when she was younger but due to having a child, never got the chance to train. On speaking to the college she found out that she may be eligible for funding for the Level 2 course providing she passes a skills test. Eva became apprehensive about this, doubting her ability to pass the test. She worked with her Community Potential Specialist to build up her confidence, but to also prepare an Aspiration Pot application for the Level 1 course as a contingency if she was not accepted to Level 2. This would at least still allow her to start some training this academic year, something she had set her mind on.
She was also encouraged to build her practical skills as much as possible from speaking to friends and family. From working with her Community Potential Specialist, Eva was also encouraged to get in touch local salons to enquire about any training opportunities but also to see if there may be opportunities for work post course completion, which she did.
In August 2021, Eva attended the college and having undertaken her skills assessment, she was informed her funding to the Level 2 is likely to be approved which will also include all equipment costs. She was delighted with this news and is waiting for the final course offer but is feeling confident that she should be starting her dream hairdressing course this September. We’re really pleased for Eva and we wish her every success in her course!
