What do our Realising Potential Specialists do?

Have you ever wanted to know more about what our Realising Potential Specialists (RPSs) do? We shed some light on how this unique role helps our tenants build confidence, stability, and opportunity:

In simple terms, RPSs are success coaches for tenants and their families.

Their job is to help people visualise and reach their goals, empowering them to feel more confident and in control of their future.

They work one-to-one with our tenants to develop a Personal Success Plan (PSP) - a set of goals and practical actions chosen by the tenant. These can range from finding work or training opportunities, to accessing further education, upskilling, or improving wellbeing.

This starts with a discovery call, where the RPS arranges a video call and uses specific coaching techniques, such as active listening, using open-ended questions, and confidence mapping to draw out what’s most important to the tenant and understand their motivation and readiness for change.

RPSs also connect tenants to local partners and training providers, and they’re responsible for processing Aspiration Pot funding for eligible tenants. This can cover costs like course fees, travel, or equipment that helps people take their next step forward.

Visiting homes

As part of their role, RPSs carry out starter and six-month home visits for Twenty11 tenants. These visits help ensure the home is safe and in good condition, but they also create a natural space to build relationships and talk about what matters most to each tenant.

“We make a real distinction between the home check and the Realising Potential part of the visit,” explains Holly Howarth, our Senior RPS. “The first part is practical; making sure everything in the home is as it should be. But it also gives us a chance to chat casually and start to understand what’s important or motivating for the tenant. Then, in the second part, we can really connect and explore how we might support them in their lives; whether that’s building confidence, finding new opportunities, or working towards personal goals.”

Importantly, RPSs don’t handle enforcement or tenancy breaches; their focus is on encouragement and early support. When they notice a repair need or a tenancy concern, they pass it to the relevant housing management team so tenants get the right help quickly.

A different kind of housing support

The Realising Potential service is about more than fixing problems; it’s about helping people move towards the life they want.

Since it launched, RPSs have supported tenants into training, new jobs, volunteering roles, and education, as well as helping people grow confidence and build stronger connections in their communities. Find out more about some of the people we've helped.

Every small success counts, and by helping tenants stay secure and motivated, RPSs also help sustain tenancies and strengthen communities.

“It’s about seeing people as more than tenants,” says Holly. “Housing is important, but feeling hopeful and supported is what really changes lives.”

In a nutshell…

Realising Potential Specialists are:

  • Coaches and connectors, helping tenants set and achieve goals
  • Community builders, linking people to opportunities and support
  • Key to Twenty11's social impact, helping tenants thrive, not just get by.
